Nama tanah
This design was created in collaboration with Julia Jouwe. Early in the process it became clear that the design should be about the role of ancestors. A child with a Papua background is given an extra name at birth, called a nama tanah. In other words; name of the land. Julia received the name Féje from her grandfather, which means 'the caring one'. Various images in the Papua culture symbolize the connection with previous generations. And each name and generation brings a certain mission. The feather is associated with ancestors. And in the feather, the culture is referred to and connected with in different ways.

Julia Jouwe
Julia Jouwe (27) gives meaning to her nama tanah in various ways. She is an activist, journalist, and storyteller. Like her grandfather, former Papua leader Nicolaas Jouwe, she is committed to the self-determination of her people, the Papuans. In 2019, she (co)founded The Young Papua Collective, a youth organization focused on talent development and preserving the Papua culture. For her master's in Journalism, she investigated the frames and narratives in Dutch news coverage about West Papua in 2021. Currently, she is researching how West Papua's natural resources influence the political situation of the country to this day.

Washing instructions
Always follow the care instructions displayed on this page. For best results, machine wash the tee in cold water with similar colors.

Drying: It is recommended to air dry the tee to maintain its shape and colors. If you need to use a dryer, set it to a low heat setting.

Ironing: If necessary, iron the tee inside out to protect the print. Avoid ironing directly over the design.

Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Avoid using bleach or strong chemicals while washing the tee, as it may damage the fabric and print.

Storage: When not wearing the tee, store it in a cool and dry place. Avoid exposing it to direct sunlight for prolonged periods.

Handle with Care: Treat your Bird of Paradise tee with care to ensure it remains a cherished part of our shared culture for a long time.
